In-game item scams: fake middlemen, trades and payments
Skins, game items and virtual currency can have financial value. A scammer may steal your account or persuade you to make an unfair trade, pay outside the platform or give an item to a supposedly trusted intermediary.
What stage is the trade at?
Someone has only just contacted me
The buyer offers a very good price or wants to move the conversation elsewhere.
What to watch for →They want to use a middleman
A supposedly trusted trader, administrator or intermediary joins the deal.
View the warning →I am about to confirm a trade offer
Check the recipient and every item again before confirming.
What to verify →I already sent the item
Keep the trade history, accounts, conversation and relevant technical identifiers.

Finds a valuable item
A skin, item or virtual currency has financial or community value.
Offers an attractive price
The offer is tempting enough that you hesitate to reject it.
Moves communication off-platform
Discord, Telegram or another external channel.
Introduces an intermediary
A supposed middleman, administrator or experienced trader.
Requests a one-sided action
“Send the skin first”, “we must verify it” or “the middleman will hold it briefly”.
Item or money disappears
After the trade, the scammer ends contact.
A middleman can be part of the scam
A professional profile, long history and positive comments do not by themselves prove trustworthiness.
Looks experienced
An old account, activity, many contacts or a polished profile.
Has a “reputation”
+rep comments, trade screenshots or references.
Appears neutral
Claims to protect both parties.
May belong to the same group
The middleman may work with the buyer or be another account controlled by the same offender.
Account compromise can redirect an otherwise legitimate trade
An attacker with account access may cancel the original offer and replace it with a similar offer to another account.
Account compromised
The attacker has access or another way to interfere with the trade.
You create a legitimate trade
The original offer goes to the intended partner.
The original trade disappears
The scammer cancels it and creates a similar offer.
You confirm another recipient
The mobile confirmation looks similar, but the items go elsewhere.
Mobile confirmation is not a formality
Before the final approval, recheck the actual recipient, profile and every item leaving your account.
A payment screenshot is not a payment
A scammer can show a convincing receipt, email or banking screenshot. Check the actual status in your own account or the platform’s official system.
Banking screenshot
An image can be edited, imitated or generated.
“Payment pending”
That does not mean the money will arrive.
Fake confirmation email
The offender can imitate a bank, PayPal or marketplace.
“The administrator confirmed payment”
A third party’s claim does not change your account balance.
Moving parts of the deal outside the platform can remove safeguards
Steam
- Do not send an item just for a promise of later payment.
- Do not approve a trade based only on a screenshot.
- Standard Steam trades do not need a middleman.
- Be cautious with PayPal, gift cards, game keys and other value outside the trade offer.
Roblox and other platforms
- Use official trading features.
- Do not trust “you send first, then I will”.
- Do not hand an item to someone else just for a supposed sale.
- Check whether the platform supports the proposed transaction.
When to stop the trade
Price far above the market
An attractive offer is designed to lower your guard.
Move to Discord or Telegram
The conversation leaves the platform.
Middleman or administrator
A supposedly trustworthy third person joins the deal.
Screenshot instead of payment
The money may not actually have arrived.
“Send the item first”
The deal becomes a one-sided transfer.
“Item verification”
You are told to send the skin to a checking or safe account.
Time pressure
The scammer does not want you to inspect the trade.
Similar-looking recipient profile
Avatar and nickname can imitate the intended account.
How to trade game items more safely
Trades involve risk. Careful checks before final approval can interrupt many common scam patterns.
Use the official system
Trade through the mechanism the platform provides for that purpose.
Take your time
A good price is no reason to skip checks.
Check the recipient
Nickname and avatar are not enough. Verify the specific profile.
Check every item
A scammer may change an item, quantity or the whole offer.
Do not send items for “verification”
A legitimate trade does not require giving away the skin first.
Read mobile confirmations
Review the full trade again before final approval.
The last check happens just before confirmation
Do not focus only on whom you chatted with. Check where the items are actually going and what the current offer contains.
The same scam patterns appear across platforms
Counter-Strike
Skins and valuable inventory items.
Dota 2
Tradeable items and other virtual assets.
Team Fortress 2
Items, keys and other Steam community assets.
Roblox
Limited items and supported trading features.
Game currencies

Other gaming platforms

A nickname is not enough
Nicknames, avatars and visible profile details can be changed or copied. Keep more stable technical identifiers when documenting an incident.
Steam ID
More stable than a nickname alone.
Discord User ID
Technical identifier of a particular account.
Roblox User ID
An account identifier independent of the display name.
Trade ID / Offer ID
Identifier of the specific trade offer.
Profile URL
Save the account link, not just a screenshot of its name.
Transaction ID
For payments, keep the actual transaction identifier.

In-game item trading scams — FAQ
Is a middleman safe?
The label guarantees nothing. A scammer can invent a middleman, impersonate a known trader or use another account belonging to their group.
Does a payment screenshot prove money was sent?
No. It can be edited or fabricated. Verify payment through your own banking account or official service, including applicable reversal risks.
Can a long-established account be fraudulent?
Yes. It may be compromised or prepared for deception. Profile age does not establish safety.
Why are +rep comments not enough?
They may come from other controlled accounts or a scam group building a false reputation.
What is a trade redirection scam?
After gaining account access, the attacker cancels an intended trade and creates a similar offer to an account they control. Recheck the final confirmation.
Can Steam Support ask for my skin for verification?
Do not trust people in Discord, Steam Chat or other unofficial contact who demand items for a “verification account”. Use the official Steam Support site.
Can the platform return a stolen item?
It depends on the platform and trade. Steam currently allows reversal of eligible Trade Protected trades within seven days. Secure your account and check official Trade History and current conditions immediately. Other trades differ; do not assume recovery is guaranteed.
What should I keep for a report?
Full conversation, account URLs and IDs, trade ID and history, payment records, screenshots, dates, times and details of intermediaries or external servers.
Remember the key rule
A buyer who pressures you off-platform, adds an intermediary, shows screenshots and demands a one-sided transfer increases your risk.
Confirm only after checking the actual recipient, agreed return and full contents of the trade.
Players may also be lured with modified games, cracks or fake helper apps. Seefake mobile games and appsand the response steps after installing a suspicious app.
